Women’s Health at Every Age

Women’s health evolves through many distinct life stages, each bringing unique opportunities and considerations. From adolescence through to the golden years, understanding what to expect and when can help you make informed decisions about your well-being. Building a trusting relationship with your GP can provide valuable support throughout this journey!

Teen years: Building strong foundations

The teenage years are transformative, with significant physical and emotional changes taking place. This is an ideal time to establish healthy habits around nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and mental health. These years also involve important conversations about body changes, menstruation, and sexual health. The HPV vaccine, administered through schools, provides excellent protection against cervical cancer and has shown remarkable success in reducing cases across Australia.

20s and 30s: Reproductive health focus

These decades often involve significant life decisions around relationships, career, and family planning. Whether navigating contraception, fertility, or pregnancy, regular health check-ups help ensure you have the information and support you need. Cervical screening tests begin at age 25 and can now be self-collected, offering greater convenience and privacy. Breast awareness also becomes increasingly important during these years.

40s and 50s: Hormonal transitions

Perimenopause and menopause represent significant life transitions, often bringing physical symptoms like hot flushes alongside sleep and mood changes. Medicare now provides dedicated support for menopause-related consultations, allowing for comprehensive assessment of your physical, emotional, and social needs. Treatment options, including hormone therapy, require 1:1 discussion to determine what suits you best.

Women in their late 40s are also eligible for a comprehensive health assessment covering screening for osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and cancer prevention.

60s and beyond: Healthy ageing

These years focus on maintaining quality of life, independence, and vitality. Regular health screenings, appropriate vaccinations, good nutrition, and weight-bearing exercise all contribute to healthy ageing and ongoing wellbeing.

Your health journey is deeply personal. Having a trusted GP who understands your individual needs makes a meaningful difference in supporting your health at every life stage. to talk more.
